What is bankruptcy?+
Bankruptcy is a federal legal process that allows individuals and businesses overwhelmed by debt to seek relief from creditors. A bankruptcy court reviews the debtor's financial situation and, depending on the type of bankruptcy filed, either eliminates qualifying debts entirely or restructures them into a manageable repayment plan.
What is a bankruptcy petition?+
When someone “files for bankruptcy,” they submit a formal collection of legal documents to the court — known as a bankruptcy petition. It contains detailed financial information about the person filing: income, expenses, assets, liabilities, and creditor claims. This document formally asks the court for debt relief.
Preparing a bankruptcy petition accurately and completely is a specialized skill — and one that's in high demand.
What is a Bankruptcy Petition Specialist™?+
A Bankruptcy Petition Specialist™ prepares bankruptcy paperwork for attorneys and their clients. It's a specialized role that can be done entirely from home — and you do not need to be an attorney, paralegal, or have any prior legal experience to do it.
Why should I learn to draft bankruptcy petitions?+
Bankruptcy petition drafting is one of the best work-from-home career opportunities available today:
- High demand, low competition — skilled drafters are scarce, and law firms are actively looking
- No experience required — learn everything from scratch regardless of your background
- Work from anywhere — all you need is a computer and internet connection
- Set your own schedule — build your practice around your life, not the other way around
- Earn $50–$100/hr — full-time income working part-time
- Recession-proof — when the economy contracts, bankruptcy filings increase
- Make a difference — clients and attorneys deeply appreciate skilled, reliable drafters
Do I need legal experience or a college degree?+
No — and that's one of the most exciting things about this career. No college degree, paralegal certification, or prior legal experience is required. Some of our most successful students never attended college. Our courses are built from the ground up for complete beginners.
How long does it take to get trained as a bankruptcy assistant?+
Most students complete their training in a few weeks to a few months, studying in their spare time. The timeline varies based on your schedule and study habits — but the training course is available online 24x7 so you can move at your own pace. Many students begin working with attorneys before they've even finished training.
How much money can I make drafting bankruptcy petitions?+
The income potential is one of the best things about this career:
- 1 petition/month (3–5 hours of work): ~$400/mo
- 5 petitions/month (~5 hrs/week): ~$2,000/mo
- 10–15 petitions/month (10–20 hrs/week): $4,000–$5,000/mo
- Full-time: Many students have built six-figure income businesses
Most students start part-time as a side hustle and grow from there. The faster you get, the more you earn per hour.
How long does it take to draft a single bankruptcy petition?+
A Chapter 7 petition typically takes 2–3 hours for an experienced Bankruptcy Petition Specialist™. Chapter 13 petitions have additional forms and take a bit longer — but also pay more. When you're starting out it may take longer, but your speed increases dramatically with each petition you complete.
What does a typical day look like for a bankruptcy assistant?+
- The attorney sends you a completed client questionnaire with financial information
- You enter the data into bankruptcy petition software and build out the petition
- You communicate with the attorney to fill in any gaps or research missing details
- You submit the completed petition to the attorney for review
- The attorney requests any changes; you finalize and return it
- The attorney electronically files the petition with the bankruptcy court
You work independently, on your schedule, communicating with attorneys primarily by email or phone. Most bankruptcy assistants handle multiple cases across multiple law firms.
What equipment do I need?+
Very little. All you need is:
- A computer with internet access
- An email address
- A phone
- Bankruptcy petition software — attorneys typically provide access to the platform they use, and many options are free
No special office setup, no expensive equipment, no commute.
What bankruptcy software do I use?+
You use whatever software the attorney or law firm uses. All major platforms use the same standardized bankruptcy forms and schedules. Our training teaches you the petition process itself — which applies across all bankruptcy software products.
Can I work for attorneys in other states?+
Yes — 100%. Because the work is entirely remote, you can draft petitions for attorneys anywhere in the United States. Most of our students work with attorneys both in their home state and across the country, dramatically expanding their client base and income potential.
Do attorneys really hire remote bankruptcy assistants?+
Absolutely. Smaller law firms find it far more cost-effective to contract a trained remote bankruptcy assistant than to hire, train, and maintain in-office staff. Since 2020, remote work has become standard across the legal industry, and attorneys regularly seek out trained, reliable bankruptcy assistants for long-term working relationships.
Do I need insurance?+
No. Bankruptcy assistants work under the direction of licensed attorneys. The attorney is ultimately responsible for all documents filed with the court — including work prepared by their staff or contractors. You do not need errors and omissions insurance, a bond, or any other liability coverage — whether you're an employee of a law firm or running your own independent service.
Does this really work?+
Yes — the results speak for themselves. Since 2005, 713 Training has helped thousands of students build real careers as bankruptcy assistants. When petitions are prepared with precision and accuracy, the entire bankruptcy process runs smoothly — saving attorneys, trustees, courts, and clients significant time and frustration. Skilled drafters are in high demand, and once you have this skill, you'll have it for life.
“This is the first work-at-home business opportunity I have seen that actually works!”
